What time do the trains run?
Our timetable changes throughout the week and year; please check our timetable for the day you want to travel. 

How long does the train take to get from Waihi to Waikino?
Each one-way trip takes 30 minutes.

Can we buy tickets at Waihi and Waikino?
Yes, tickets are available from both stations.

Do we need to book, or can we just turn up?
If you book online, you can collect and pay for your tickets at Waihi Station. You can buy tickets at either station. If you have a group of more than 20, or have special requirements, please call the station in advance to make a booking on 07 863 9020. 

If you are running more than one train, do we have to specify a return time?
No, you can choose any available return.

How can we pay?
We accept cash, Eftpos, and credit card payments. For group bookings of 20+ we also accept payment by internet banking.

Can the train accommodate wheelchairs?
Yes, with sufficient prior notice. We need to reconfigure the train to include a carriage with a ramp, and this takes time.  We prefer at least one day’s notice.

Can we take bikes on the train?
Yes, for a small additional fee.

Are dogs allowed on the train and in the campground?
Yes, but must be on a lead. Normal dog rules apply – clean up after accidents.

Are dogs allowed on the Rail Trail?
Dogs on leads are permitted in the Karangahake Gorge section of the Rail Trail from Waikino Station to the old Karangahake Hall site at Crown Bridge at the northern end of the Victoria Tunnel, and where the trail intersects the urban areas of Waihi, Paeroa, Te Aroha and Thames. DOGS ARE NOT PERMITTED on any other section of the Rail Trail.

Can we charter the train for a private function?

Can we reserve a carriage for our group?
Yes, give us a call on 07 863 9020 to discuss.

Can we take food and soft drinks on board?
Yes, but don’t forget the Waikino Station Café – a cozy, kid-friendly cafe with great coffee, a range of delicious food, good value and friendly service. Call ahead to discuss group requirements on 07 863 8640.

Can we take alcohol on board?
If you have chartered the train for a private event, or hired a carriage for the exclusive use of your group, yes; otherwise no.
